I plan to visit some markets to shop. Are there any cultural dos and don'ts when it comes to bargaining in Vietnam?

Bargaining is a common and accepted practice in local markets in Vietnam, especially at touristy spots or street stalls. Vendors often start with higher prices expecting customers to negotiate, so it’s perfectly normal — and even expected — to haggle a little.

It helps to ask around at different stalls to get a sense of the general price range before committing. Some vendors might quote higher prices if they sense you’re unfamiliar with local pricing, so a little comparison shopping can save you money.

When bargaining, it’s important to stay friendly and polite. A smile and a lighthearted attitude can go a long way in getting you a better price. Vendors appreciate good manners and often respond more generously if you’re respectful and cheerful.
