I've seen many people wearing áo dài for special occasions. What is the history of this traditional dress, and when do people usually wear it?

Ao dai is deeply rooted in Confucian values and Vietnamese traditional ideals of modesty, femininity, and beauty. The flowing design represents the softness and grace of Vietnamese women, and its evolution reflects both historical and cultural changes throughout the centuries.

Historically, the Ao dai was not exclusive to women. Both men and women wore it, though the male version was looser and more subdued. Today, men still wear Ao dai on formal occasions such as Tết or weddings, especially in traditional ceremonies.

The Ao dai is more than a costume—it's a cultural icon. Worn in schools, offices, and celebrations, it connects modern life with Vietnamese heritage. Its colors and patterns can also signify status, region, or marital status in certain contexts.

While the Ao dai’s silhouette has changed over the decades, especially during the 1950s and 1960s in southern Vietnam, it remains a timeless garment that proudly represents Vietnam’s resilience, beauty, and adaptability in both fashion and spirit.

The Ao dai has its origins in the 18th century during the Nguyễn Dynasty. It evolved from a five-paneled aristocratic gown called "áo ngũ thân," worn by both men and women. Over time, it was refined into a more elegant and form-fitting dress, especially for women, and became a symbol of Vietnamese identity and grace.

The modern version of the Ao dai that we recognize today was influenced by French colonial fashion in the 1930s. Designer Cát Tường, also known as Le Mur, combined Western tailoring with traditional Vietnamese garments, creating a tighter, more flattering silhouette while preserving cultural aesthetics.
