I'm curious about Vietnamese weddings. What are some traditional customs and ceremonies that are unique to Vietnam?

Even though modern Vietnamese weddings often include Western-style elements like white dresses and wedding cakes, most still preserve cultural rituals like ancestor worship, traditional attire like áo dài, and ceremonial processions.

A big part of Vietnamese weddings is the tea ceremony, where the bride and groom serve tea to their elders to show respect. In return, the elders offer advice, blessings, and sometimes jewelry or red envelopes with money for good fortune.

Some regions in Vietnam have unique customs. For example, in the North, the wedding is more formal and involves many steps, while in the South, the ceremonies are simpler and focus more on the reception. In the Central region, some families still follow ancient rituals passed down for generations.

Vietnamese weddings are deeply traditional and often involve multiple ceremonies. It usually starts with a formal engagement ceremony where the groom’s family brings gifts to the bride’s home. Then comes the wedding day, with the groom’s family arriving to "receive" the bride in a formal procession, followed by a tea ceremony where the couple pays respects to their ancestors and parents.

Weddings in Vietnam are also major social events. After the ceremonies, there’s usually a big party or reception with lots of food, music, and sometimes karaoke. It’s a time for family, friends, and neighbors to come together to celebrate and show support for the couple.
