I've noticed that many Vietnamese homes have altars with incense, photos, and offerings. Can you explain the purpose and meaning behind this practice?

The altar serves as a spiritual hub in the home. People pray for health, success, and protection, especially during important occasions like Lunar New Year, death anniversaries, or before making big decisions.

Many believe that if ancestors are properly worshiped, they will bless the family with peace, fortune, and harmony. Neglecting the altar, on the other hand, could bring misfortune or bad luck, according to some traditional beliefs.

The altar also plays a symbolic role in family unity. During family gatherings, everyone comes together in front of the altar, offering incense and food, which helps strengthen emotional and cultural bonds between members.

This is the worship of ancestors of Vietnamese people. The altar is the place where they burn incense to invite their ancestors back on every occasion of death anniversary or new year or the first day of the month according to the lunar calendar.

Some families also have Buddhist altars.
